Who banned telegram and why?
If you were also using telegram and faced sudden network issue where messages got pending, media was buffering forever then you need to know that The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) blocked the app on 16th July 2026 under Section 69A of the IT Act, acting on an urgent recommendation from the National Testing Agency (NTA). The ban will remain until 22nd July 2026. The main reason behind this 1 week ban is the Organized cheating syndicates (channels like "PAPER LEAKED NEET" and "Private Mafia") targeting the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21, 2026.
What will be the impact?
As we all know telegram was used widely for pirated movie, software and nsfw content download, but there are also a wide range of audience who are using telegram for better purpose. There are a huge number of students who are relying on telegram study groups that distributes legitimate notes and study material regarding any course, job and exams for free. There are also people who can not afford paid google drive for cloud storage and are using telegram to store media. All those users will not be able to use or access telegram till 22nd.
Technical glitches and policy pushback
Due to Telegram's specialized protocol (MTProto) and encrypted DNS over HTTPS, ISPs struggled to fully execute the block, leaving the app functioning for many users. Telegram founder Pavel Durov publicly criticized the move as a "mistake" that punishes 15 crore innocent users, arguing that exam leaks simply migrate to other apps.
